Essay:
Do you know if you are going to die today? Most people have heard the phrase “live every moment like it’s your last” but more often than not this phrase is used lightly. I would love to write some profound essay that would change the life of anyone who reads it, but as simple as this topic is, it is too complex for most people to grasp.
It is an excellent concept. If everyone lived by this idea, the world would be more productive and more thankful. People would work hard to fulfill their dreams and make some kind of impact on the world.
Have you ever watched one of those movies where the main character finds out that they only have a certain amount of time left to live? Take “Last Holiday” for example. When Queen Latifah’s character thought that she would die soon, she began to move and make things happen. She made the best of each moment and worked on having a better quality of life because she didn’t want to waste the little life that she had left. Considering the fact that you don’t know when you’re going to die, shouldn’t each day be lived abundantly?
Make every moment count. I have been pondering my life and its end. If I die soon, what have I done in life, and what am I doing to give God a reason to keep me here. I think of all of the time I spent angry. I think of all of the opportunities I’ve had to have joy, give joy, and even just experience something; new or usual. I realize that I’m not satisfied with the way that I’ve been spending my time.
If today was your last day to live, what would you do? I think most people only ask themselves this question after being diagnosed with some terminal illness, or having a near death experience. If tomorrow you found out that you had two weeks to live, would you be satisfied with the way you spent your life, or would you be sick with the thoughts of all of the things that you could have done and all of the things that you should’ve handled better? Would you regret that grudge you held with you mother or friend for that day or week? Doesn’t that day or week seem much longer in terms of life?
My grandmother’s sister worked very hard, and she was always doing something. One Saturday evening, she went to choir practice, learned a new song and sang beautifully that night preparing for that next morning. Sunday morning, she got up, bathed like any other Sunday, and died of a heart attack while putting on her bra. “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow: for what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). Make every moment count.
