Essay:
There are many ways of describing a person. With each new experience the adjectives build upon one another. Personally my adjectives include Brunette, Short and Californian. I have also tried on the adjectives of Backpacker and Environmentalist. Most recently they have been piling up to build the A.Tianna of Spain; which includes Hiker and Teacher, with the occasional moment as Flamenco Dancer. I am looking forward to this June when I can proudly wear the adjective Graduate Student. And regardless of what path I choose I am guided by the pillar of Dr. Parker’s message: Your attitude in life determines your altitude. I hope to be able to proudly declare that one of my adjectives is vivacity, and a trait that has attributed to the altitude I have achieved up until today.
As little orphan Annie said ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’. And I find there is a great kindred energy between the two messages. We have many choices in approaching a situation, and I find comfort in both orphan Annie and Dr Parker’s inspiring thoughts. We do have the capacity to make change throughout our actions, but moreover, through our attitudes. That no matter what other attributes or adjectives we personally identify with, our attitude is that which we most predominantly present to our community, society and the world. And that one quality, our vivacity, smile, and positive attitude is that which will carry us to achieve our dreams, to make us polished and fully dressed; and is that which will ultimately determine our altitude.
I am proud to be an Environmentalist. I am animated by the possibilities presented to me in graduate school. But at the end of the day, I am most motivated by the capacity to achieve that is provided by one singular adjective: vivacity; and with this positive attitude, I hope to reach the highest of altitudes. I will reach for the stars.
